Tagung 2023:
Within the Second Polish Republic (II.  Rzeczpospolita), the Silesian Voivodeship (Województwo śląskie) occupied a special position. It was the only autonomous voivodeship in the Polish state. The Konstytucja (Constitutional Act) of 15 July 1920 (Dziennik Ustaw Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej No. 73, poz. 497) granted autonomy to the Silesian Voivodeship and provided for the establishment of a separate legislative body (Sejm) for the Silesian Voivodeship. At the same time, the Geneva Convention between Poland and Germany, guaranteed by the League of Nations, took effect. The Polish law of 15 July 1920 ordered the incorporation of the previous legal system into the legal system of the Silesian Voivodeship. Thus, in addition to the new Polish legal acts, Prussian law applied in some parts of the Silesian Voivodeship, and Austrian law in others. The legal history and legacy of this "Zwischenraum" is the subject of a research project with Kamila Staudigl-Ciechowicz (Vienna).
